@QiaochuYuan From his publishing record it looks like he did his grad work at Drexel from 2006-2014 doing DARPA funded security work, then went to MIT for a postdoc in driverless cars and kept publishing there until 2019. "Research Staff" usually means you aged out of postdocing.

@QiaochuYuan because he hasn't been publishing my guess would be that he's basically adjunct now (not being paid) and asked to keep his affiliation for clout
