“Rapidly we approach the final phase of the extensions of man—the technological simulation of consciousness, when the creative process of knowing will be collectively and corporately extended to the whole of human society…” - Marshall McLuhan, 1964 https://t.co/izJSYtCvUN

“Today the action and reaction occur almost at the same time. We actually live mythically and integrally, as if we’re, but we continue to think in the old, fragmented space and time patterns of the pre-electric age.”

Said the Duke of Gloucester to Edward Gibbon upon the publication of his Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire: “Another damned fat book, eh, Mr. Gibbon? Scribble, scribble, scribble, eh, Mr. Gibbon?” 😂😭💀

I keep referencing this Mcluhan quote lately when talking about the utility of repeating oneself and going in circles https://t.co/VM35pf8o2a

@nosilverv McLuhan is full of gems that are excruciatingly relevant to our current times… one of my plans is to try and write some essays referencing and relating his thinking (tho currently brain is fried keeping a newborn alive lol so probably not happening anytime soon)

@visakanv Key is to see the spiral, different from circling. Requires willingness to step back or aside and perceive in 3D instead of the simpler 2D. Concentric implies seeking to reach wider expanse or a point. Maybe that also oscillates.

McCluhan’s Four Laws are not real laws, but lenses to help us think about possible effects of new technology. New tech: 1. Extends something human 2. Makes a previous tech into sport or art 3. Brings back a previous tech 4. Becomes its opposite when pushed https://t.co/7X72oYLY7u https://t.co/zHlSjHWryt

@visakanv another good thing about going in circles: you can read something dozens of times without it "clicking" until you find it framed in your own language (with the frames you're used to), then you instantly get it going in circles maximizes the chances of this it'd seem
