one of the briefest recommendations i can give for spirituality to be always involved with at least two different communities, so you will always have a perspective from outside the other one. anything else is too consistently dangerous, every time

the spiritual communities we have are nascent, and young; they have no ability to point to outside themselves, and no wisdom to help connect people with their own discernment, to individuate. to be the good mother and grow them up, then be the wild mother and throw them out

they have no wisdom to teach teach people to be skeptical of the community itself, to grow beyond the community, to become real people, and come back and participate in the community, as full people

i mean importantly, those teachers' advice was contextual. at other times it was my yoga teacher (kindly): quit your fucking day job my tantra teacher (kindly): quit your fucking day job
