We need 2 diff words for "empathy" (good theory of mind, can predict how another person feels) and "empathy" (feels deeply for another person when you know/hear about what they're feeling)Imo the second is actually "empathy" but ppl use the first definition a lot and it irks me

@QiaochuYuan Oh niceI prefer to just call the first one "good theory of mind" because imo the "empathy" label gives a slight moral/virtuistic sheen to sth that comes for free with neurotypicality 😈

@not_a_hot_girl as the buddha once said, "skill issue" šŸ˜› also i don't really think neurotypicals have particularly better theory of mind in general (also also i sort of don't think neurotypical is even a meaningful category)

@QiaochuYuan I agree actually, they don'tI think we FURTHER need to draw a distinction between "good at modeling other people (bc they just model themselves)" and "good at modeling other people (from careful observation)"

@not_a_hot_girl i use EQ or ā€˜emotional intelligence’ for 1 and ā€˜empathy’ for 2 i also use ā€˜empath’ as a verb for when ppl do 2 without language or discreet knowledge, intuiting & matching another’s emotional state and ā€˜empath’ as a noun for people who automate said process

in chess, one of the top skills is to stop thinking selfishly & have some empathy "what does my opponent want?" "what's their plan?" not only, "what checks/captures/attacks do i have in this position" but also, "what checks/captures/attacks will my opponent have after my move?"

@not_a_hot_girl The first one is the only one that matters. Internal states of mind is not directly observable by the world, and if it doesn't lead to action, it is no different from not existing. With predictions, you can act accordingly.

@not_a_hot_girl i kinda think the opposite although this maybe isnt the same distinction but like lotta people rely on the latter to tell them who deserves empathy and the former can lead to the latter and allows us to treat people who are different from us like human beings

Emotional Empathy: physically feeling what someone else is feeling Cognitive Empathy: perspective taking on an intellectual level, diagnosing the cause of someone's distress Compassionate Empathy: desiring to help someone else Which empathy do you feel the MOST?
