We need 2 diff words for "empathy" (good theory of mind, can predict how another person feels) and "empathy" (feels deeply for another person when you know/hear about what they're feeling)Imo the second is actually "empathy" but ppl use the first definition a lot and it irks me

@QiaochuYuan Lmao oop https://t.co/wFlh6wRcYb

@not_a_hot_girl as the buddha once said, "skill issue" š also i don't really think neurotypicals have particularly better theory of mind in general (also also i sort of don't think neurotypical is even a meaningful category)

@not_a_hot_girl i use EQ or āemotional intelligenceā for 1 and āempathyā for 2 i also use āempathā as a verb for when ppl do 2 without language or discreet knowledge, intuiting & matching anotherās emotional state and āempathā as a noun for people who automate said process

@not_a_hot_girl oh no it me https://t.co/p1GfBRBIby

in chess, one of the top skills is to stop thinking selfishly & have some empathy "what does my opponent want?" "what's their plan?" not only, "what checks/captures/attacks do i have in this position" but also, "what checks/captures/attacks will my opponent have after my move?"

@not_a_hot_girl The first one is the only one that matters. Internal states of mind is not directly observable by the world, and if it doesn't lead to action, it is no different from not existing. With predictions, you can act accordingly.

@not_a_hot_girl I wrote about this š« https://t.co/1Tscp6SGXN

@not_a_hot_girl i kinda think the opposite although this maybe isnt the same distinction but like lotta people rely on the latter to tell them who deserves empathy and the former can lead to the latter and allows us to treat people who are different from us like human beings

@not_a_hot_girl i agree! here's how i think about it https://t.co/rXQDymL8Se

Emotional Empathy: physically feeling what someone else is feeling Cognitive Empathy: perspective taking on an intellectual level, diagnosing the cause of someone's distress Compassionate Empathy: desiring to help someone else Which empathy do you feel the MOST?
