good thread teaching someone to make art is relational, and they may not know it’s happening for a while these counterintuitive methods sound about right i want to add my own https://t.co/Wc4qu0XeN7

you have to encourage the person to engage their attention, but not through robotic fixation their attention needs to stay fluid, alive, playful so the encouragement is not to *pay* attention, like an obligation but to *give* attention, like a lover to the beloved

they cannot believe anyone else’s opinion matters as much as this inner truth does, or they will become lost so even your opinion as teacher is of no value. your method cannot be to praise their inner truth, but to elicit *their pursuit* of it

and the emergence of their truth cannot be confused for a product — it is always and only a process. attaching to one artifact of this truth (a book, song, painting) is as lethal to its emergence as attaching to another’s opinion. it aborts the process of emergence.

an artist has the same ethical obligation as a journalist: to enter the field & report as honestly as they can the field they report on is their inner world they must not bend the story to the opinion of the reader — or the editor. you’re just holding them to doing the research
