Excellent thread @RichDecibels, adding some thoughts here on: 1) the function of online 2) why the temporary local is crucial 3) how to move to permanent local 4) saving communes with polycentrism 5) the map as a living pipeline 6) missing dimensions next to the social https://t.co/a9yrtgNqKm https://t.co/n3LjO9qJvc

thinking about this community map this part of twitter is interesting coz ppl realised they could move right, from temporary to permanent online relationships then the swarm of camps proved we can do temporary local community now the big Q: how to land in the bottom right? https://t.co/RNN2S4WEHr

1) IMO online is needed bc: It puts out a bat signal, allows aligned nodes to find an edge to connect to. it's the mushrooms singing of the mycelium, sprouting in different psycho-geographies. also enables bootloading context, making IRL more productive https://t.co/l3yNvFm6TR

this map implies that it's possible/natural to move from online to local community, but I want to be clear I don't know if that's true. there's a chance that online is basically a distraction and the sensible path is to focus on local from the outset

2) The temporary local 1w-3m gatherings are also crucial since they allow for deepening and establishing connections rapid experimentation with social tech, governance, infrastructure nourish the community fractal from intra-personal, dyads, squads, up to Dunbar scale https://t.co/jz0N0gYkTC

3.1) so what do we need to move to the permanent? requires more commitment so the building blocks are committed dyads, teams, and local tribes: people who have found each other and want to build a life together. ideally connected by shared mission/vision to build a hub for X

3.2) these permanent hubs might look like something in between university/monastery/art residency/venture builder etc. yes, each of the local hubs should have a steady stream of visitors and host temporary gatherings. but they need permanent residents https://t.co/iqf8rpuyLk

4.1) I also find most communes yuck... and I think they are needed bc: - ability to create its own culture, live by its own calendar - more room for long-term work/practice - connection to a bio region - possible independence from larger structures (food, energy, etc.)

4.2) communes should be done IN TANDEM with the neighbourhood model sister communes+neighbourhood in nearest city, get the benefits of both. commune connected to neighbourhood + larger network stays poly-centric, avoids most of its pitfalls. a steady flow between them.

5) I don't see the map as a one-way journey, but the establishment of a living pipeline. ppl will travel along it (just like we open it up now step by step). there will be many overlapping communities/psycho-geographies that exchange information no single social solution https://t.co/RTHgAu0Xsx

6.1) We are figuring out the social dimension - what social graph, what social technologies works, what values we can connect around. What's missing? ECONOMICS. Acquiring the real estate, financing shared missions, and dealing with the economic entanglement of members..

6.2) GOVERNANCE Benevolent dictators work for temp IRL but won't cut it for permanent Democracy & consensus modes are needed + the ability to shift gears between modes (including meritocracy) see https://t.co/S3t5zvWwXW MEMBRANES are connected here i.e. who can participate

6.3) protecting against failure modes e.g. CULTS, power grabs, audience capture, institutional ossification, discrimination etc. etc. we need to build in protective measures before this grows too big. governance helps but is not sufficient. https://t.co/H2at5JM8Mk
