as a child, i expected elders to be strictly more wise than me in all aspects. why would i be right and they wrong? and surely if i was right and they were wrong, they would admit it? they rarely did, and it confused me. they were awful about knowing the bounds of their wisdom

there was always this holdover cultural narrative in my culture that “kids have so much to learn from elders.” and in practice what i saw more was kids who travelled more in a decade than their parents had in a life, and got tools, thoughts, freedoms their parents (sometimes) felt curious about and could use

this wasn’t all kids. some seemed to follow the usual pattern, of not having too much to teach their elders, and learning the usual life lessons at the usual life points (omg don’t drink so much at parties! learn at 22) some souls were just born old

at some point, you decide the hand that is guiding you is a bit confused, and needs some help https://t.co/LzfKzyYJ8Z

@AskYatharth “born an old soul” imo is often a euphemism like Korean fan death. More often than not when you actually examine what happened, there is some shock / rugpull event that basically shocks the kid into consciousness, and they have an accelerated learning

@AskYatharth “shock into consciousness” is something you can start keeping an eye out for and you’ll notice it cropping up a bunch https://t.co/iTpYdrISBR

I was reading recently about some guy who was tortured, I think during WW2. and he said something that shook me to my core. I paraphrase– he said... until he was tortured, he had never been truly awake, truly alive. like torture was the moment he first experienced consciousness

@AskYatharth “Did you hear about Joo Sung?” “He was under a lot of stress...” “He was feeling very warm and fell asleep with the fan on.” “Ah, so he did.” https://t.co/KuFh6aAuEv
