i'm looking at the image in the op and thinking, you know, sure JPEG is lossy compression, but it's not literally doing as described, regenerating the noise. such a thing *is* a feature of certain ai image generators / filters / regenerators. close to that is the determination of what is signal and what is noise, and to who... different answers for humans and microphones. i still think the elaboration has a lot to do from where shannon started it off, even if he did so much
