we sort of come here to twitter because we're drowning, and there's one set of skills / concepts that is relevant to moving from drowning to treading water, and a different set of skills / concepts that is relevant to moving from treading water to swimming to land

i don't love any particular developmental framework but i'm inclined to think of different people on here as dealing with different developmental transitions one way or another, and advice perfect for one transition may be the wrong direction for another. tricky stuff to sort out

there is some relevant material in @Meaningness' discussion of robert kegan's developmental stage model that now might be a good time to inject back into the memepool https://t.co/CHMPCXmImp https://t.co/MgGswGkTDe

kegan's basic model can be injected with additional nuance, e.g. with a parts-work pov that different parts of you can be at different developmental stages. i think there's a meaningful sense in which a lot of inner work amounts to "redoing kegan 3 for all of your parts"

and i've had a hunch for awhile - although i don't love this language for it - that some people around here have lately been moving on to "redoing kegan 4 for all of your parts" which is just a different activity that imo requires different stuff than the current "tpot canon"

some vague attempts to gesture in the direction of what i mean by "redoing kegan 4": the questions involved are things like, what are my values? what are my priorities? what projects do i want to take on? who do i want to collaborate with? what am i willing to *commit* to?

if "redoing kegan 3" involves freeing up stuck emotional energy, letting go of old stories and conditioning, expanding possibility, "redoing kegan 4" involves redeveloping a relationship to focus, choosing new stories, spending optionality. deconstruction vs. reconstruction

so: how do we do this? "When an individual is ready to move forward, the social environment should start to challenge their current developmental stage: to point out what doesn’t work in it, to disapprove dysfunctional behavior based on it..." https://t.co/3bbAOeTy4T

this is a tricky program to implement on twitter! the problem is we don't really have a way to decide "when an individual is ready to move forward," and top-level tweets that "challenge their current developmental stage" may be read by people who *aren't* ready

anyway i don't have a proposal for what to do about this, just thinking out loud, would be very interested to hear what if anything resonates about this or what words you'd use to describe the thing instead insofar as you agree there's a thing here

very relevant https://t.co/jXazvOtTy2

YOU NEED A SERIOUS PROJECT This cuts a couple different ways, in that A) choosing a well-aligned project can be jet fuel for moving your life and soul to unfold in the right direction, B) choosing a soulless or empty project will inflect your awareness w soulless nada https://t.co/8ddrCgYqmJ

right speech is an example of something i'd call a "redoing-kegan-4" practice and *not* necessarily a "redoing-kegan-3" practice. at redoing-kegan-3 i think this is likely just going to feel like suppressing / censoring yourself (from personal exp) https://t.co/AyZnFSNi3n

@QiaochuYuan just leaving this herehttps://t.co/RjGbgSY1W7

@QiaochuYuan Redoing 4 reminds me of the last step of unburdening in IFS “Ask the part what qualities it would like to invite in that it may need in the future, or that got pushed out by the burden.”But it’s barely fleshed out
