In 2019, I participated in the first Write of Passage cohort. For the final assignment, I wrote a piece summarizing the most valuable mental models for strategy that Iād found. I connected to my work at the Monastic Academy, and called the post āMonastic Strategy.ā

In 2021, I left the Monastic Academy, and went out into the world. All of those same strategy models still applied, of course, and I found them useful in my endeavors and projects. I began to want to revise the post.

In late 2022, I finally found the time and impetus to revise the post. I spent a couple of hours clearing up some of the more glaring problems, removed most of the monastic context, and gave it a new, more accurate and also sexier title: āStrategy 101: An Introduction to Power.ā

As an afterthought, I submitted the post to Hacker News. The post very quickly went to the front page. A lot of people found the post valuable. I got an influx of Twitter followers and newsletter subscribers. And there were also a number of cranky comments š

Iāve since substantially revised the post, incorporating the feedback Iāve received. The core valueāa list of the models Iāve found most usefulāis still there. But thereās significantly more context + justification for how I see strategy and power, and for each tool.

I plan to include this post as a chapter in the book on Empowerment I am co-authoring with @mary_bajorek, so I would value any feedback you might have!https://t.co/C6hSrKfhEB
