Startlingly effective AI tutoring is coming. I had thought it was 5+ years out and now I think it’s more like 1 to 3.

In K12 we’ll probably see it in the technical core first, writing and math. Content subjects, science/history/lit etc., will take more time.

Part of the reason why tutoring is so effective is because it bypasses explicit pedagogy. It’s easier to develop the techne of helping and motivating this one student in front of you than the science of explicating a generally good method for learning something.

The real golden goose would be the union of the science of great explicit pedagogy and the art of great coaching and have more directionally trained AI. (Would be interesting to see if there’s convergence with the more raw big data types of AI over time.)

> Why do you believe this, Matt? 1. Critical mass of AI things that are far ahead of (my) expectations. I've been an AI/ML skeptic for a decade but things have changed. 2. AI tutoring has been a holy grail in education for 40+ years. Motivation to work on it is very high.

I'm not actually working on this (presently, at least). But follow me anyway for parenting and education takes. :)
