I watched this video over a decade ago and still think about it all the time: Bobby McFerrin teaches the audience to be his backing track and performs a song with them in real time https://t.co/vWjO0Dm5nQ

notice how there are moments where he surprises them โ first by introducing the 3rd note, the second is when he spreads his legs to two separate notes. he uses these to entertain and get a laugh โ he lets the audience laugh, then brings them back to the point and reinforces it

here's another example of another great musician and teacher doing the same thing โ again, after you watch it the first time, watch it a second time to pay attention to how he challenges the audience, supports them, repeats himself to encourage them: https://t.co/XE8PcO5fUc

an interesting thing to explore: are these fellas such good-natured people because they're so good at being playful with others? or is it their playfulness that makes them exude such good vibes? causality is complicated, but the two are clearly related https://t.co/yShIMh5pGa

bobby using both his choir and the audience as a loop pedal "when you can't afford a loop pedal but u have a village" "its like getting only the good parts of a cult" "he played the audience better than my ex-girlfriend played me" so. much. fun!!! ๐โค๏ธ https://t.co/cDyv9aobWP

what I think all of these musicians have taught me is that *everybody* gets to have so much more fun if you involve the audience. music, sense-making, we can all be collaborators on all sorts of things https://t.co/gxg8DE5HF6

if you watch all of this stuff, you start to get maybe about 10% of a sense of what my optimism, cheerfulness and playfulness is about, what it's grounded in. I mean it when I say that I would give my life to protect musicians. they taught me how to live https://t.co/AIV8Colnfe

musicians all over the world playing Stand By Me, together I remember crying while watching it on repeat, while I was flunking at school and my parents was mad at me for playing guitar instead of studying I would give my life to protect musicians https://t.co/I9bAsExmBC https://t.co/eEesJGuGOa

and in a sense, I suppose I already have, and will continue to do so. ๐ฅณ๐ธ๐ค๐พ๐ต https://t.co/5Mfp2ERhyC

@visakanv This one feels real powerful, especially juxtaposed alongside all the rest of my Twitter timeline. It draws a picture of harmony, unity, love, kindness; almost feels like something we don't deserve anymore (but surely we do). The power of art, I guess.
