i basically didn’t think i could survive direct social conflict with anyone else, or at least, it would cost energy and drag us both down, so i avoided all conflict

this was impossible to do as an immigrant before, where i did not have a stable home, or a stable social group, where i relied on the pleased generosity of benefactors and barely just met friends in new environments this is changing

to have a felt sense of enough, you need to want to live with what you already have not be trying to escape it, because it’s not good enough

if you’re a temporary houseguest in a foreign country of city, you don’t try to create conflict. you’re not planning to stay very long either
