i don’t think i understood until this last week how functional the ingredients of a stereotypical vacation are: get sunlight, be near water and in nature, do whatever you want in an unscheduled way, eat good food, walk around looking at beautiful things, hang out with your buds

the “do whatever you want” piece is maybe what was missing for me growing up - i went on plenty of vacations with my parents but i never got to control what we did so i just resented the whole concept of leaving the house where my toys and books and games were

(the cultural construction is the construction of a workplace that deprives the animal enough to make vacations necessary - ugly buildings, artificial light, sitting still in a chair all day, schedules, mandatory thinking, etc. etc.)
