I've had some convos with people where they've described Calvinism as the source of a pernicious subtle meme that's something like "suffering is actually good and pleasure is actually bad" Can someone confirm & give context/source?

@Malcolm_Ocean I’m soooo glad you’re pulling this thread, I’ve been too. Honestly “is following pain or pleasure more likely to lead to a fulfilling life overall” seems empirically testable via surveying many people across cultures, idk why I ain’t heard of such a survey yet…

@relic_radiation we don't have any modern cultures that are seriously doing the pleasure thing all the way down. it's still transitionary this is the thing I'm working on

@Malcolm_Ocean re: “no modern cultures” - idk, I’ve found (micro)cultures in my travels that I never imagined existed 😍 also - @pusssywitch coined the term “pleasure oppression” & could be interesting to interview

@relic_radiation @pusssywitch hmm yeah definitely microcultures. harder to survey tho because of other unusual factors of those microcultures. and I'm still not sure if any of those are "all the way down" in the sense I meant, or if they're still kinda layery in some ways

listened to some episode of vervaeke (around ep20) and he says that it goes all the way back to Luther and the protestant reformation (although it seems to have fallen out of the foreground in progressive denominations now)
