the fact that psychology majors don’t have a reputation as being particularly charismatic or good at relationships or even at managing people is a pretty damning indictment of either academic psychology or college or both

@QiaochuYuan is right, they aren't particularly good at relationships. This is because: *people go study psychology because they're drawn to find out what's wrong with them* it is not the case that psychology makes you charismatic or better at relationships

professions and areas of study act like the Harry Potter Sorting Hat. They look inside of you and bin you with a kind of crew of people https://t.co/pJQ9s4sRVJ

would it surprise you to learn that a lot of computer science people are introverted? They chose a profession that had them talking to computers 8 hrs/day That accountants are detail oriented & analytical? That nursing students are caring?

yes yes, we have to cop to it, these *are* stereotypes and don't hold for everyone. And yet how many extreme introverts go into sales? How many artistic empaths go into accounting? Some, for sure but not most. The sorting hat isn't perfect but it's pretty good

source of all of this is that I was a psychology major, got a degree and all of that good stuff and my favorite class was: abnormal psychology where people would out themselves constantly

student: *raises hand* prof: Yes? student: "Uh, I have this .... friend? Yeah, a friend, that's the ticket. And he's having this weird problem, and he wants to know if it's normal" πŸ™„πŸ€£

in the module on paraphilias (atypical sexual interests) a student asked about a "friend" who had problems with (gulp) self-pleasuring with sandpaper this is the kind of person who is drawn to study psychology

So I studied engineering & a technical discipline, got a double major. And I noticed: all my psych friends were a bit messed up, empathetic extroverts all of my techie friends were straightlaced, introverted analytic sorts and they disliked each other

for the record if you're having the sandpaper problem the recommended approach is to gradually transition to finer and finer less harmful grit levels and gradually wean down roughness until you reach non-harm #WeirdStuffIWishIHadNeverLearnedAndStillDontWantToKnow

academic psychology won't tell you what's wrong with you or how to fix it, but it will give you 12 different theoretic frameworks to describe why it's a problem
