overall i think the lesson of the florida law is that using public schools to transmit values is not gonna work where values are diametrically opposed across large portions of the electorate and maybe its not really a good idea anyway

everyone arguing over whether the law is good or bad is missing the point which is that the outcome in either direction is going to be unacceptable to at least a substantial minority of users of the service and popular and universal public schooling basically seems infeasible now

actually fighting over the issue raises its salience and further sharpens the divide too so anyway look forward to that

i dont know. i think possibly i can see futures like: 1. different sides win at different state/local levels, end up with a patchwork of norms, reinforce over time (😬) 2. (1) but less assortment and more local exit 3. (1) but losers just deal with it https://t.co/pSslrvY9xP

to the extent there's exit and i expect there will be exit i can imagine parallel systems growing and deepening to the extent its symmetrical i can imagine growing bipartisan support for vouchers it seems like in most cases tho public schooling is further weakened as a system

oh @toad_spotted wrote about this, along with other trends a couple years back ongoing revolt of parents over covid stuff and coherence of parents as an interest group against teachers also seems relevant https://t.co/6wSCv2C54b
