you can’t moralize away a load-bearing coping mechanism

rather, you wanna identify what the load is, and redistribute it elsewhere once the cope is made redundant and unnecessary, it becomes much easier to remove, no moralizing required

moralizing in fact often introduces more load (guilt, shame, anger) which can reinforce the cope

this is why Allan Carr’s easyway to quit smoking (system that’s worked for loads of people) insists that you continue smoking while reading the book. This eliminates the moralizing, which reduces load, which makes it easier to dismantle the cope

Taleb said there are 3 addictions- heroin, carbohydrates and monthly paychecks I’d like to propose a 4th: moral superiority

so then you step back and look around and, my god, the whole species is in the thrall of a massive multiplayer strange loop of load-bearing coping mechanisms

@visakanv why shouldn't we all be coping all the time, the universe is super wide, weird, barely understandable, constantly changing, and ultimately going to kill us. Haven't we all had those days, "You're just lucky I got out of bed today" πŸ˜‰

@pragueyerrr Wat I do: Identify what needs are being met by them, and look at how ELSE those needs could be met Put zero pressure on self to STOP addictive behaviors Begin ADDING behaviors that take care of unmet needs Slowly, addictive behaviors lose their sparkle
