seems like the core of all deep interpersonal control is teaching people to experience fear/pain when having certain thoughts or feelings

right, in this situation, if i as a kid can be convinced to experience shame about the situation ("i'm a bad kid for not enjoying the [bullshit]"), or experience fear at the prospect of petitioning the local authority to let me go, eventually i'll stop trying to solve my problem https://t.co/Qzcy3ojbt5

not only will i *behaviorally* stop trying to solve my problem, i'll stop even thinking about it. this is like a variant of a double bind. set up a situation that in important ways precludes them acting on their values, while also insisting it's in line with their values and/

/shame them for noticing the discrepancy. if the shame wins, you're on track for teaching people to give up on themselves in a very deep and nasty way not just "give up on pursing specific paths" but "give up on guiding via self-direct agency at all" https://t.co/iNvWkpiGwz

having my hand slapped away is such a resonant comparison that's the first part, and the second part (which can happen with varying levels of intensity) is a sorta "shutting off of my agency". a holistic dimming of my being so has to not have loops that push me into another slap

the psychological difference between a prison where they're like "yeah, fuck you, you're a prisoner, get fucked" and a prison where there are significantly nicer material conditions, but it's still a prison, and everyone tells you how lucky you are to be here

though you could still wind up hopeless and not trying to escape in the obvious prison, your mind can still conceive of the problem that is "escape the prison". it's clear you have a will, others have a will, and they are using their power to constrain you

Peaky Blinders was a great meditation on what a world with overt violence/"prisons" looks like it's a grisly nasty violent place, and lots of the characters are very mentally fucked up, but they aren't fucked up in that way that i and my friends are

their control systems RELY on you knowing exactly what will get you beaten up or killed, and by who. it's maintained by the presence of CLARITY about what the threat landscape is like. there's still lots of ruling with fear, but it's fear about actions, not thoughts

to be clear, i don't think that world is better. It just illustrates the way the the particular "agency collapse" the seems common is not simply a result of being embedded in large control systems that can be hard to push against. the attack on the mental is a big part here

@Austen I've recently been getting curious about sklavenmoral, aka ā€œinternalized envy of othersā€, at @RaymonddeOlive1's suggestion https://t.co/nFwMtks6Jo
