I fucking hate it. Each time I write a note, I’m tempted to link it to XXX. But XXX the note isn’t ready to be made public yet; incoherent or private.

Compare: Twitter. I just write. I have a library of stuff I’ve written in the past in my head, and if I want to link something, I’ll quote it. It’s already been written, for free. https://t.co/cQ69lBra10

when you note-take on twitter, your ideas become “public-ready” by default https://t.co/XYUNtvcMIL

I guess I could just not link the note. Or link it below in a private postscript. Or be okay with people constantly running into 404s. But it’s frustrating.

It’s trying to connect it to a database of stuff that’s not public, while Twitter is trying to connect it to a database that is public.

Again, sure, sure, I could treat it as if I’d never written those private notes, not feel the loss of not linking, etc. But the point is all that discipline hurts. https://t.co/bH7Vxs9tQt

there are all these Note-taking courses and strategies about how to avoid this creating discipline and tactics but holy shit, it sounds like plugging a hole with cheese curds and never being totally certain if it will work i was never going to happy with that

Maybe all is just to say something magical about Twitter does work. Why doesn’t Twitter have this problem? Because on Twitter, threads feel cheap.

i can just *write*, and because it’s chunked into these bits of 280 characters, writing each bit feels useful i’m almost forced into a style where each little paragraph or thought does convey a point

writing these blog posts or notes is like embarking on a long project you know you don’t have time for, and it just feels full of friction

“yatharth it’s in your head, just allow your notes to be tiny” no! see point about discipline & friction before my systems should facilitate interactions with sparks of joys that reinforce my patterns not little electrical shocks every time i try to interact with them

“yatharth, just call those notes seed notes and say they’re not sprouted yet” ok but no. here’s why. on twitter, it’s always clear /when/ i write a note, /what’s already written/, and i write the thread in the context of that

in digital gardens, im in this awful place where i don’t know whether to assume that note is readable or exists, or just put all the context here, but now it’s overflowing, boo

in twitter, i can just create a lil placeholder thread and link to that, or quickly describe it in 1–3 tweets “sure can’t you do that in digital gardens” ok im finally warming up to this idea “it took you time”
