1. “Why do you make threads?” A thread is just a way of connecting dots. A series of connected dots is a way of creating order out of chaos. I think of it as tidying up the junkyard in my mind & workspace. Why *wouldn’t* you thread everything? 🤔 https://t.co/3qcc2wlJYC

Interesting conversation with a writer friend earlier about the fragmentation of information. We both agreed that fragmentation isn't actually a bad thing - what's missing & needed is better threading. Twitter threads are a specific instantiation of a solution to bigger problem

2. “Doesn’t it take up a lot of time and energy?” You could say that – but it’s actually less effort than you might think, and it gets easier & more natural with practice – and most importantly, it *saves* me time and energy in the long run https://t.co/gySuYJZrn8

After a couple of years, I am extremely convinced: threading is a superpower. It doesn't actually require much intelligence or skill. You just need to ask, "is this thing relevant or related to any other thing?" – and if it is, you thread it. It takes minimal effort and yields 🔥

One reason I make threads is bc I hate having to waste time looking for stuff. I hate that sometimes I think “oh, this reminds me of a thing I once read, or saw, and now I’m going to have to try and Google for it, and maybe I’ll find it...” – I make threads for future reference https://t.co/vTljrS68DA

3. “OK, but you have so many threads. How do you find the right thread to add stuff to? Do you have a database or a spreadsheet or...?” Not really. I do have a blogpost with links to some of my threads but I never use it. I just do a from:visakanv search https://t.co/8qGxdWQSC0

4. “How do you know what to search for?” I don’t always! Maybe something slightly unorthodox about my twitter use is that I spend a lot of time searching “from:visakanv <random string>”, so I kinda have hundreds of old tweets floating around in my short-term memory https://t.co/VXFJXIyY5Z

Also, because I know that I like to reference things, I subconsciously tend to include unique-ish words that are easy to find in search. Eg I’ll be able to find this by searching “from:visakanv leafy” https://t.co/jWXWrEvJ1W

Anybody else been paying to the proliferation of this leafy aesthetic? This is in SG Starbucks https://t.co/tymtuDdtrq

If I know that the odds of me wanting to reference a thread are high, I’ll make sure to add it to existing threads that are already top-of-mind. I just added this to my “fragmentation” thread and my “txt” thread, so I know I can find this by going through either. Less to remember https://t.co/HrpR2KuthM

5. “Can I look at that blogpost anyway? I want to look through a list of your threads.” Sure! Be warned, it’s messy & incoherent & not at all optimized for public consumption. Posting this here might shame me into tidying it up, but I wouldn’t bet on it https://t.co/IwAYGqoHhL

6. "Do you have like, a taxonomy of the different types of threads you do?" Yep. I wouldn't read too deeply into it, though – ultimately all threads are just "one tweet after another". A thread can be several different types of thread all at once https://t.co/CXGW0p6EWY

the surge of emotional energy from a venkat compliment is giving me the Useless Fellow Power I need to attempt make a thread about the different kinds of threads I make. 106am, let's do this https://t.co/Cs6XVzZoIj

Someone asked me to do a thread about how I use Twitter search. It all started here. 1. Use from:username to find something someone tweeted https://t.co/plLDrJV5UL
