it’s when two different controllers are trying to control the same thing to two different places and instead of continuing to raise the stakes higher and higher instead of escalation and stakes you wonder if there is a better way to live

non-coercion is about finding a life that doesn’t involve brinkmanship at every step

for those of you who wonder why non-coercion seems to matter to people, this is why it’s not wanting to live like this. 24/7 https://t.co/ZxZYAZhoo0

> not being sure if I should I think this is really indicative of something. What’s going on when I’m lying down in the bed is two very, very fucking strong shoulds grinding against each other: 1. I should go get the waterbottle, this is the sensible thing to do. https://t.co/g78m8sy6gw

non-coercion is not tugging on the rubber-band tighter and tighter but finding a way to exit the game https://t.co/XxXpRQwOa8

@Malcolm_Ocean by the way, it’s very difficult to appreciate Malcolm’s point without having read Making Sense of Behaviour: The Meaning of Control (the PCT book he’s mentioned elsewhere) https://t.co/tQvV5a2CZ5 https://t.co/dVmx87X1N3

insight courtesy of @Malcolm_Ocean on several levels - his use of the word “deescalate”, in what is my favourite 2x2 ever - his mentioning the book above enough times to get me to read it https://t.co/LoAgjmgmQD

@petheth Yeah, they really seem to tug against each other! I explored transcending that duality in a blog post a few years ago: "Towards being purpose-driven without fighting myself" link: https://t.co/iSt5O8K64u https://t.co/qnuMsduNS3

non-coercion isn’t about productivity, or this, or that it’s about a felt shift of feeling. about experiencing a certain lightness for people who may be completely unfamiliar with it https://t.co/omZpMmhYLB

point of this thread is maybe to show that non-coercion has stakes for the people most into it something about recognising the stakes accurately helps let go of the negative framing https://t.co/z5WMP5cJCj

otherwise you just keep solving the wrong problem “just do it ahaha” no. dude. that isn’t the point it’s a freedom from a weight you know little about, or care to remember for

Even just tolerating even the brief discomfort of getting out of my bed was enough to activate this huge mashup of grinding. This is what I mean by everything in my life felt high-stakes. https://t.co/dzsvJWrdjv https://t.co/hScp5XRq0o

if you’re at a point where going about your daily life is the equivalent of having someone screaming in your face, things have gotten pretty dire. it’s salvageable but it will take time. you need to rehabilitate your relationship with yourself. You start by putting the gun down https://t.co/bMVE2CufU8
