I've been thinking about the societal implications of Alexander Technique style 'expanded awareness'. One area that comes to mind is the role of activism as a kind of societal awareness trigger, whereby the role of the activist is to expand society's awareness of an issue.

This is important because a collapse of awareness makes it impossible to notice, and therefore to act, on something. You can't make new choices with respect to something you can't notice, which gets you stuck in existing patterns. I suspect this scales up in an unhelpful way.

If this happens at a societal scale then all of society can get stuck in a fixed pattern, unable to notice or respond to things that may affect it (insert your favourite issue here). The role of the activist then is to 're-expand' society's awareness of the issue so it can act.

Developing conscious control of awareness is not only important at an individual level, to help us break free from existing patterns and to make new choices, but is also vital at a societal scale if we are to navigate our shared future in a wise way.
