notes to self while reading sumiko tan’s book, which is an aggregation of her weekly columns since the 90s https://t.co/CsNW0ZPsa0

an interesting general tone thing – and idk how much of this is sumiko’s personal style vs the zeitgeist at the time – is how casual and comfortable she was just saying things that make her kinda look bad, like being judgmental, shallow, superficial, etc. Kind of refreshing tbh

note to write about how hilarious/bleak the Social Development Unit was/is – very emblematic of Singapore, I think. To overwork people, wonder why they’re not dating, and then come up with yet another new initiative to try and get people to do what they’d do naturally if rested

@visakanv bumping this thread between @cybianlesborg and @fdbckfdfwd bc i think there's some great potential here for absurdist comedy, especially with recent news 🤡https://t.co/jXtNtoVd3l

1996 article about widespread myopia in Singapore’s children. Increasingly common and more severe Dr Chew Sek Jin, headed Singapore Eye Research Institute’s myopia unit: “our children lead different lifestyles… spend much more time studying… we are trying to find a treatment” https://t.co/duGRHkPGAt
