Having savings is nice. Living off them is terrifying. Having a safety net is nice. Sitting there tweeting on it is terrifying.

Maybe there’s a useful distinction between “emergency fund”/“safety net” and savings/checkpoints. The second one you’re actually meant to live off of.

If I had to write the Harvard entrance speech (or places like it) I’d just say “being here for one day has already given you 99% of the status boost graduating will. So you’re free now, unchained from status incentives. Make really really really sure you actually want to be here”

If you ever have a choice, wear your best clothes first, because by the time you get to the others, you may have found a laundry machine, or acquired even better ones. This is a principle for life.
