I learned how to make banana moonshine the other day. https://t.co/it8QzRpTmv

Re: banana moonshine. I read that banana tea can help with insomnia. I don't think they meant alcoholic banana tea, but couldn't hurt, right?https://t.co/dpk9QL5OPL

I asked Google for "LD50 Bananas" and this showed up. It doesn't mention bananas at all. I'm confused.https://t.co/DM4BQ7zsWP

"But I'm afraid that his banana addiction is going to infect his family. [...] and if they get infected at such a young age, they'll be just like him, and never stop." 🤣https://t.co/frjFHZh6Fi

So... Uh... Technically too many bananas CAN kill you, if you make banana moonshine it can lead to Hyperkalemia. Ironically this is actually a potassium overdose (but unrelated the bananas) https://t.co/nMh3d1JxLc

I find it fascinating that so many sermons during the early 19th century coincided with the rise of prohibition. "As one bad apple spoils the others, so you must show no quarter to sin or sinners." https://t.co/q1MDMb4H7I

Strangely, another reference I have about apples is also from smithsonian. It talks about how our beloved children's story of Johnny Appleseed's spreading of apple trees is actually because he was sowing sour apples to make booze.https://t.co/43fDLYxTgc

Speaking of narrative violations. I didn't realize until just now that "Apples and Bananas" was perhaps originally done by Sandra Beech? It seems children's songs hit their stride at around the time the FTC restrictions on advertising to children died.https://t.co/hvv6cjkZuz

Of course that was centered around free speech, and the actual concern about advertising to children lost. All of my childhood has been subject to propaganda of brands due to creeping censorship & 'muh free speech' rhetoric. It drowned out nuance.https://t.co/ZzeDjnoQRd

Marketers Ruin Everything."Federal Trade Commission reached a settlement in 2010 requiring the marketers to stop making allegedly false and unproven claims that their vitamins promote healthy brain and eye development in children." https://t.co/WsJSYiXTpq

As much as I dislike the foolishness that happens with FTC, I think they are the only force we have at the moment that stops this bullshit:"You may say the FTC is "Bananas,” but they say that Banana Silk and Bamboo Silk are not silk, bananas or bamboo."https://t.co/nisouStCIf

Personally, I think we should legalize banana consumption. Right now it is impossible to trust your banana dealer to not lace it with apple cider or other harder fruits. The hard-line taken by the FDA against bananas is only serving to further entrench its use as a gateway fruit.

I'm not saying eating bananas isn't dangerous, only the current marketing & regulatory environment makes it difficult to understand how to consume bananas responsibly and safely. I'm concerned big-fruit is lobbying against eating bananas because apples might not be sell as well.

The myth of banana madness."resistant starch isn’t easily digested, it reduces the amount of sugar released into the bloodstream, helping control blood sugar. Research also suggests that resistant starch helps maintain the balance of healthy gut microbes"https://t.co/9UzXPjOugq

If not for sale, I at least think that people who need to eat bananas medicinally should be allowed to grow their own for their own personal use. I haven't made up my mind on recreational banana use, but I don't see the harm.https://t.co/RgbgaW9lBp

I support home grown bananas, because if we allow bananas to be consumed legally, there is a risk that we'll see an increase shipments of fruits across the board. Perishable fruits may increase chance that unrelated drugs might be shipped more frequently: https://t.co/O1Amz38Mkp

Research is being done that suggests bananas have a wide range of uses beyond recreation."Constipation cannot be managed using medication alone. Better short- and long-term outcomes are achieved with lifestyle changes, including a proper diet."https://t.co/EywcP5qthf

There are other practical reasons for ending the Banana Trade. The industry as it exists is full of a lot of human tragedies that could be completely mitigated if we legalized home-grown bananas.https://t.co/ForngyoTUo

There's even some reason to believe that the Banana Trade was responsible for a mass murder - with people being framed as communists in order to take control of massive swaths of plantation land.https://t.co/tzZfjmx8cQ

Despite all of this, Bananas are still regularly consumed by people world wide. There are even tips for growing your own available online if you look. They are just plants like any other.https://t.co/UfE9aewYR8

"And the plantations are not fun places to work, either [...] But many people don’t have options. In regions where banana plantations have such a foothold on the local economy, the only jobs available are at the plantations."https://t.co/2pqoezDtD6

There's a long history of westerners disliking bananas, it's taken a lot of science and r̶e̶v̶e̶r̶s̶e̶ ̶p̶r̶o̶p̶a̶g̶a̶n̶d̶a̶ ̶ public service announcements to be able to undo the myths about bananas making you sick.https://t.co/AdrDB8OAnq

One fascinating fact about bananas, is that unlike those we had in the 1960s, the modern banana has become more potent. It is basically a different breed altogether compared to bananas studied in the 1930s.https://t.co/oZtacVMucB

While I have been harping on the banana conundrum, don't think this problem is limited to illegal fruits. Even the commonly prescribed apple is subject to the same market forces leading to perverse growing conditions and poor adaptations to risk.https://t.co/EVTvSyY2iV

Despite the risks, it seems scientists have even managed to create synthetic banana using bacteria. https://t.co/cwI9gcWWBc

The problem with the synthetic version is that it is indistinguishable from the real stuff, but falls under a completely separate FDA regulation.https://t.co/9nrl1DGghC https://t.co/D3h1CO0qcJ

Ah yes, the United Fruit Company's war on bananas absolutely needs another injection of land. /shttps://t.co/sht8Rb1DXT

This is why we can't trust modern research on bananas.https://t.co/9cdZdL3f9U

Banana strains come in all sorts of odd names.Like Gros Michel, Cavendish, Splits, and even spiked with other drugs."and of course it's not only to the history of candy that this ties to, it's tied to the history of the american soda fountain..."https://t.co/TPhgQ4FGNp

The desire to mass produce such addicting products run deep in our modern industrial world. The human need for bananas, driven by advertising campaigns and industrial mono-crops, means they too will soon be replaced.https://t.co/8ve5og6Emz

"With this new ban in place, all platforms will now have to monitor for illegal fruit consumption, on top of the already intense restrictions given to them by the government." 🍌https://t.co/NiDYmrJuhm

Illegal bananas are a plague on many nations."China had destroyed 35 tons of bananas from the Philippines valued at $33,000 last March, and eventually suspended 27 exporters."https://t.co/9SkrG2ZXtF

That candy shop I posted a couple of tweets ago also deals with other illegal fruit: The Black Currant.https://t.co/mKSxkNEou1

I've always wondered why red currant wine was such a highly sought after product. It turns out it's high price is because it was illegal?! You'd think New York would be against this kind of thing given their war against smoking.https://t.co/yQvddF2clh

Alas, New York is absolutely riddled with the remnants of fruit consumption.https://t.co/kE5MxyOLOv

The banana menace has been a facet of New York for longer than almost everyone alive!https://t.co/MiXMxjPnkO https://t.co/NmabAyx4YI

So much tragedy and strife over a fruit. Bananas are truly a gateway drug.https://t.co/IFsrtpCAh1 https://t.co/PrEpMmrJrl
