I'd be curious to see stats on what fractions of the time various cultures across history spent in their "felt safety" rest & digest social-engagement nervous system state. as opposed to, you know, the other states.

@relic_radiation What do you suspect is the case? I'd imagine this is a relatively recent "post-scarcity" phenomenon

@CXGonzalez_ You know, Idk! I was raised to believe that historical lives sucked, and also every so often I come across something like this. “Although hunter-gatherers lived in the harshest environments on earth, they spent less time working than any typical nine-to-fiver.” https://t.co/lhiBlGwWol

@CXGonzalez_ Also giving me pause: I’m struggling to keep my nervous system stable in a city with access to my phone. Yet on weeks-long social camping trips, I rarely-if-ever face that problem.

@relic_radiation I’ve definitely noticed the same! Hell if the first thing I do when I wake up is reach for my phone I can tell my attention span is shot for the rest of the day, and anxiety isn’t far behind
