Reading about treaties & congresses & resistances is amazing to me, because it shows just how big the question of tribalism is, and collectively surviving and providing order en masse. We don’t have to think about that, where we live in relatively stable territories and govts.

Even then, the small hand of tribal survival plays, at the level of individual diplomats, and parties, and companies.

Order is being provided en masse by individually small, but concerted tactics, focused not on drawing economic resources but *dealing with the problem of other human beings who want your stuff*

That’s the core of it. These aren’t “real” problems to rats who think about value creation or making the pie bigger. They’re the old problems of fighting against other humans to jostle for existing stuff.

I think that’s what I’m integrating. That providing order and creation cohesion between a population is a real problem. That constantly holding at bay and engaging in manipulation, coercion, and ally-building of other people is a real service.

It provides the buffer on which to build stuff in a world that does not owe you anything because it is just a world; rain, hunger, hunters just are.
