I lived with this guy in Hanoi, an absolute character. Total piece of shit, but never boring. He was perfectly round, had giant um… what are the giant sideburns called? Chops? Mutton Chops, there we go. Thick Hungarian accent, he couldn’t talk without yelling,

he was racist against groups so specific I couldn’t imagine who they were, and because I was the only other white guy in the house, he just assumed I was on his side about all of it, even when I very specifically pushed back,

Every time I went to the kitchen, he’d hear me and come out and start ranting and raving in a big booming jolly-santa-hitler vibe, It got so bad I completely stopped cooking, for fear he’d corner me into another rant (not ‘conversation’—it was never a conversation)

Anyway, at a certain point he moved out of the house, and stole some stuff from everyone on the way out. Shoes, cash, water bottles, jewelry, kitchen wares—whatever he was able to get. All he got off of me was a bottle of clove oil, so I was the lucky one.

I read the post and was completely unsurprised by the story: Basically, he’d taken out as much cash as he could from some local loan sharks, gotten loans from coworkers and acquaintances with various sob stories, basically raised up all the cash he could get on hand in Hanoi,

I scrolled down to the comments and it was an absolute jubilee of jovial fury down there. Dozens of people from around vietnam commiserating over this fucking dude. Over the past 5 years, he had left a trail of fraud, lies, hatred, some violence, grudges, theft,

and very general piece-of-shittery all across Hanoi and the outlying districts. It was such a weird vibe. Everyone was sharing war stories about this dude, but most of the people were in very good humor about it, glad to find other people who would believe them about this guy.

He was such an unbelievable character, it was nice to have a whole little forum of people who all knew him and what he was like. I shared my story and moved along, but it was a weirdly cool thing to see everyone coming together to try and figure out where this dude was.
