"This person really likes ants" https://t.co/swaqMDX9A3

I am totally not trying to get you to post tweets containing information about you (twitter has gleaned as relevant) to reverse engineer your browsing habits; especially not after realizing how valuable this would be for me to make friends if I saw your topic recommendations. π

It seems if I look at a bunch of people in a row, twitter decides what content bucket they belong in. Just spent some time reading a bunch of investors outside of my follow network and BAM https://t.co/ATAxT6Czdt

I can no longer X out the topics. But it also doesn't take up as much vertical space. Anybody else get this? Wondering if I'm on an A/B test or not. https://t.co/QHqc8VWBIK

Clicking on the "+" in one UI follows the topic. "Adds"Clicking on the "+" in another UI acts as an accordion menu. "Expand"Expansion shows the old "Follow" Button. π https://t.co/Cvdb3D2nFM

I don't know of a non-ablest way to describe it, but I feel like the UI is 'schizophrenic'? The underlying "Design Language" is incoherent.https://t.co/RX56A5aaXxMakes me wonder if 'topics to follow' mechanisms are being driven by some hidden metric only twitter understands. https://t.co/WUliyUox7g

Seeing the UI change on a per-widget basis makes me think it's being managed by two different teams internally. I assume twitter hires great people and this is a structural problem + symptom of "Conway's Law". But it could be that they are just incompetent. Hard to say.

Just so we're clear. The change to the "topics" UI has invalidated the original impetus of this thread, so shifting it to:1) UX/UI theory.2) Meta-linguistics on how mental health metaphors are shitty across industries.3) Nature of institutional design systems & how they fail.

This has been on my mind because of watching @Tantacrul's excellent mini-series on "Music Software & Interface Design" (which show up in https://t.co/XXHVRaLoTf).Specifically thinking on how history & structure of development teams impact design evolution.

I also watched this documentary [https://t.co/IbcWyj37P5] on the development of @astroneergame and have put lot of thought into the nature of learning theory when it comes to Video Game UX.https://t.co/lwzBADAiyT

@The_Lagrangian Hard part: simple affordances are boring; most games don't develop a learn-able 'design language' in their mechanics, much less realize that is even a thing that is needed. It's why board (and video games) depend on tropes.Good parallel in video games:https://t.co/woTcmYqLQD

The music metaphor is nice here. We have people who get really good at one particular instrument, and really great at a particular genre of music. But it takes a great composer to pull all these pieces together into a cohesive whole, and a great conductor to guide the exposition.

Framing social media sites like Twitter (or Facebook) as games and meta-game platforms seems like a fairly good mental model."A social version of anything can almost always be much more engaging and outperform a non-social version." https://t.co/Rdw40qYj85

They finally let you x them out again.Watching regression and recreation in real time is wild. https://t.co/GlvOYvxf4s

Oh god, it got bigger. The twitter feature that shall not be named.https://t.co/CNXa2LqIz0 https://t.co/iaN72EZ3Mt

I remember once someone talking about how Facebook and Twitter are empowered by leveraging their interest graph to get network effects. https://t.co/sP4BCOptURHonestly I may subscribe to topics now that they surface things like this. I love interests graphs now. https://t.co/eiheQWv5Bq

It looks like it's the same widget but with a different rendering format Same response and the 'x' even sync.I wonder how many versions they have. https://t.co/bu7UrmAczL

"We won't suggest this Topic anymore"Straight up lies, lmao. https://t.co/9GjvRxF57d

I think I hit a hidden API limit. It won't let me 'x' things out anymore. I'm really good at breaking things. https://t.co/2yzJeVfeW3

It seems the "x" in the sidebar just likes to disappear sometimes for no reason. https://t.co/4sONGOaas4

Aaaaannnnnddd its back. https://t.co/m8ow19UGT2

I swear they are gaslighting me. This widget keeps getting bigger and smaller every time I refresh to get a new set of topics to X out.. https://t.co/Uw4pEjqdrt

πFound another bug. https://t.co/4nH5Jt0JAU

For some reason I was subbed to B*C ?! I don't remember doing that.Found another weird UI glitch after a mis-click. https://t.co/d4BGQhEcuV

It just... It just... gave up? https://t.co/jGsr73HsFp

Oh that's neat. I didn't know topic following were public. https://t.co/5KRHmNrN11

That system is buggy too it seems. https://t.co/x15Mcl7Vzv

Confirming that going to someone's page shows me suggested topics relevant to them on their wall, because I still have none on my list. https://t.co/J5CGkx9QSH

I see you followed a state, would you like to follow all the other location based topics in our database?Never mind you did it because of a miss click. https://t.co/YkFyInAH9h

BRB, following "Breeders", the dramady serieshttps://t.co/qHMlzJRzqk

And "PEN15" the sitcom.https://t.co/AcLbh4Cy1q

I wanna click the little x on things more. So I'm seeding my topic recommendations with some bait for the algorithms.Chaffing and winnowing myself with the interest graph. https://t.co/2ewSsK0z3a

It's working :3https://t.co/3G743BFIrm
