So for newsletter reasons I'm reading the original trolley problem paper and I would like to note two things: 1) In the original paper it's a tram. 2) The potholers example from the paper is much more engagingly weird and I'm surprised that this is not the one that got memed.

A party of potholers is stuck in a cave with rising water. A fat man is stuck in the mouth of the cave, and they will all drown if they do not get him unstuck. Fortunately, they have some dynamite... Philosophy is wild.

This is from "The Problem of Abortion and the Doctrine of the Double Effect" by Phillipa Foot, though she lists it as an example "well known to philosophers" rather than of her own creation.
