stumbled onto a Twitter account earlier where a guy was being quite funny, but after I read about 4 tweets it suddenly hit me that he was performing a pitch-perfect Disneyfied remix of a distinctive Extremely Online patter, and I whiplashed from “oh cool one of me” to “oh no”

it’s inescapable that people will pick up on other people’s mannerisms, voicings, cadence, tone – but past a certain threshold it gets spooky to see people talking exactly like you. I’m not claiming he’s copying ME, but it’s jarring to see your style reduced to a shell script

this is psychologically a weird experience when I started selling Singlish tshirts in Singapore, I was basically the only one who did it the way I was doing it but eventually even Disney (literally!) got in on it it’s challenging to discern the truth of the situation https://t.co/DS5IfrS4Gi

to be precise: I wasn’t the 1sr *ever* to do Singlish tshirts, you could find some at flea markets and stuff, but I’ll be precious about it and say that I framed it differently. My predecessors were crude, I was stylish ominous to realize I was doing free market research for DIS https://t.co/nRUuH5ToUM

In 2011, I posted a bunch of t-shirt ideas on Facebook - mocked them up in MS Paint. People started asking if they could buy them. This grew into @jibabom, through which me and my partner Desmond have sold thousands of t-shirts and gotten all sorts of interesting opportunities https://t.co/uYlWTjUBgl

but anyway, the abundance mindset move is to always move on to the next thing. people have figured out this voice? cool, that game has been completed. time to find a new game https://t.co/OtpUhpvq5F

round the decay of that colossal wreck boundless and bare the lone and level sands stretch far away https://t.co/pt6VvXjMZt

This quote has been sticking with me. I feel like it applies perfectly to thinking about internet celebrity and going viral. You have to have a sense of the broader context, and be able to not take it personally, not fall into the trap of thinking "I went viral, I'm so great" https://t.co/6uqB4bYKZQ

yea this is part of what’s spooky about it you make an effort to be artful, elegant, thoughtful your imitators just copy whatever gets the most likes and bombard the whole area and the mass audience laps it up bc they have no taste and will like whatever they’re told to like https://t.co/QIIoujdimc
