I loved, and really miss, the shared, sacred spaces of mass exams. I always found them incredibly conducive to focus. Everywhere else, everything in the world vies for my attention; in exam rooms there was only ever one thing to focus on. No decision-making was needed at all.

University libraries go for a similar effect but allow too much privacy and individuality for this to work. In exam rooms, everyone is facing the same way in a clear pattern; not multiple people, instead a group with shared purpose and intentionality. Easier to embody the spirit.
