To say something is a pragmatic act, even if it is true.

To utter something is to make a move in a social language game, *whether or not you wanted to.*

To say, “There is a non-zero chance vaccines are a hoax” is both trivially true and a very definite pragmatic act in the context of a famous person saying it on TV.

What saying it does is norm and normalise certain positions; to give certain groups vindication, who claim you as support, even if you didn’t want to be claimed by them; and this is an act.

Not to say its good, or bad, intrinsically. Just that it is one, and it is rational for people to push back on your action. My point is not to make anything good or bad. Just to explain things, and have the world make sense.

This condition is frustrating to INTPs and rationalists, because they think out loud, they think with their brain by saying what they think, and they expect it to be true, and to arrive at truth and what to do collaboratively with others. This is not how normies work.

cue: friction in rationalist–normie interactions. This is why it’s so nice to have spaces like LessWrong where rationalists can safely engage in their way of thinking.

What defines postrats in part is postrats can talk about anything. They will move to and *through* the truth, into what must be done with it. https://t.co/sDETkjunqv

@monodevice @RobertCinci @nihilionist Many postrats are reeling against the trauma of illegibility prestige and returning to what feels good and natural and obvious, and this is Good. A lot of stuff in the world *is* bullshit, and it’s hard to call out without leaving no sacred cows alive.

Yes, it may be a societally dangerous action to question science out loud, but in this little inconsequential corner, one can question science, and come out on the other end, with a sophisticated understanding of how science is deeply flawed, and it’s worth doing XYZ anyway.

You need to be playing the same game, though. It’s not about “higher” or “lower” game. If your partner is playing a different game, and you know it, and you play at a different level, you’re being silly, even if your game is higher. https://t.co/VQIjzetyTC

@harveykrishna_ @_StevenFan A related take is: Are you both being adults in this situation? Do you have roughly the same ideas about what game you’re playing? Or is one of you playing at a higher level that the other person cannot even access? Adults can talk about anything.

Tantra too will tell you the truth. It told me the truth, and it made me feel safe, because no one the fuck else seemed to want to tell me the truth, and I felt confused and isolated. https://t.co/Q6opuiUR2F

Dojos literally have explicit belts. You get punched in the face if you’re sorted wrong. They’re not afraid of inequality. Tantra isn’t either. It could tell me the blindlingly obvious truth, 𝘸𝘦’𝘳𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘭, while maintaining the emptiness of that too. https://t.co/5yAjUudFX3

It’s why I have such a special place in my heart for both tantra and postrats.
