Hanoi Expat Vibes: My friend went to a meeting with her (expat) therapist. He showed up 30 minutes late, drunk, and called her the wrong name. He was one of the more professional therapists available.

Hanoi Expat Vibes: A coworker drove home drunk on a motorbike and got hit by a truck. Literally hit by a truck. Survived, got sent back to UK to recover. Came back when he’d healed up several months later. He drove home drunk again his first weekend back.

Danang Expat Vibes: Hung out on an empty beach at night, meditating to the sound of the waves with my men’s group. Cheesy drum circle vibes, but I always felt relaxed there.

Korea Expat Vibes: The common joke about night life in Korea is that even if you pass out on the street with your wallet lying beside you, the worst that will happen is you’ll wake up and someone will have ordered your bills by denomination and put them in your pocket.

Korea Expat Vibes: My friend C—- and I were walking down the street, and suddenly a Korean man was calling after us and chasing us. C— had dropped her credit card, and this guy ran a block to give it back.

Korea Expat Vibes: I fell asleep in a subway station at 3am, waiting for the trains to start again. An old Korean woman poked me awake at 5am to hand me an orange juice she’d bought me from the vending machine. “Hangover, no good” she smiled.

Thailand Expat Vibes: The Thai construction workers at the buffet won’t stop cheering and grinning and giving me shots of some utterly poisonous rice alcohol. It goes surprisingly well with the curry, but at this rate I’m going to be too drunk to walk back to the apartment.

Thailand Expat Vibes: After awhile, you realize that fried crickets are delicious, and pod hostels are cozy, so yeah, fuck it, eat the bug, live in the pod.

Thailand Expat Vibes: The waiter sees me walk in; he comes up, slaps both hands on my chest and goes “wah! Superman, yeah? Strong guy, extra meat for you, free, free!”
