What is the psychology of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl archetype? 🧚 what does she want? what draws her to certain types? what is she running away from?

This video traces the development of this anima in Hollywood film. “Movies about MPDGs are never really about the MPDG. These movies always start out with the first ingredient: a sad boi.” https://t.co/x2FmPdEoIy

“The job of the MPDG is to fix the sad boy and lead him to wherever he’s supposed to go to be whoever he’s supposed to be and then disappear just as suddenly as she appeared in the first place.” Oh. This explains so much. She is not the one, and she knows it. She cannot keep.

Compare the MPDG with the girl version of this . . . Twilight. “We start off with a lonely, brooding, misunderstood sad girl.” Now it’s the boy’s job to help her transform the girl into a completel new person, right? Nope.

It’s still the girl changing the boy. One difference is “in the girl version, the newly-minted perfect boyfriend gives up his old life to be with her forever whereas the MPDG more often than not somehow disappears from the boy's life,” by breaking up or moving away.

@AskYatharth i mean its pretty much just bipolar + adhd, or some other RCCX theory type nymph. shes kindof unmoored: free but without grounding. she meets a cute boy with depression who is feeling trapped, and she helps him learn to live a little while he helps her file her taxes

@AskYatharth She wants love but thinks love comes from appearing authentic rather than actually being herself. She is drawn to those that reinforce her idea of being herself rather than being herself. She is running away from herself.

@AskYatharth No one reinforces this better than a man who thinks he needs a her to fill out his mask.

Realising the female version of this is someone like Zuko. I’ve seen more than one teenage girl crush on this fantasy of a brooding hot yet sensitive broken but fixable man to nurture into growth. https://t.co/G215JUmIRp

Another example . . . Twilight. Still the girl fixing the boy. Though this time the boy stays, whereas in the male fantasy, the MPDG almost surely leaves after the boy is done growing from her. https://t.co/iDHZTP62rR

As I try to empathise with the mindset of a 16yo girl who would romanticise Zuko like that, it feels a lot like: “In fixing him, I feel real. I see my actions reflected in the world. I feel real.” https://t.co/z16T2zvYKz

Does posting this have an oomph to it? Not quite. It’s starting to. This is already real. I feel I have waited all my life for this moment to step inside the house as people say, “Welcome.” Welcome to a world that feels real, and experiences and actions have that oomph to them

Maybe it’s that estrangement from the world and feeling of finally feeling real unites the pull of MPDG and broken dreamy boy. All we wanna do is just feel real and feel like something matters. To have a soul Sometimes this is the only way it comes out. https://t.co/ndWiAqxfab

@AskYatharth yaaas, instinct-followers unite 💕 much warmth to you. after I clawed back from a near-death xp on a startling truth that "I can't die! I haven't even lived yet!!" I now...rlly think that not-following-instinct is "already soul death." & like, we're alive. so let's be alive 💕
