Attempting to grep the entire history of humanities's attempts at health, so that I might better understand the self.I don't want to become a doctor, I want to become a demigod.A mortal raised to divine rank. Disciple of the ancients.

Realizing somebody on the schizophrenic spectrum has a very different inferential distance makes them significantly easier to understand.

I don't even have a formal degree despite passing 4 years of coursework in computer engineering (which, at my school, meant associates level skills in electronics)Turns out they don't give you a piece of paper if you can't get all your loans squared up to pay the school, lol.

I was arguing with a DNP about weening my GF from a bad medication. They were using how they went to a conference in London; argumentum ad verecundiam. Found out after fact that, at the time, the person who did the keynote speech was following me on here.https://t.co/viDJNXEeCn

I can't talk to practicing doctors anymore. I'm sure somewhere out there is one who actually knows what Bayesian reasoning is, and might have an idea of what I mean by causal modeling. But most of them think of genetics as a game of dice.https://t.co/qMRVFGJmlK

Not being able to get on disability has changed my plans. And after all this time seeing how insipidly ignorant some doctors are, I no longer value someone's credentials. It tells me nothing about the quality of their ideas. I will never get a degree.https://t.co/aHFezJ2cNW

I can respect someone who's spent time to go thru the processes, and I understand the value. There are certainly people who's ideas I trust whom have achieved a high level of credentials. But for every one I find, I see 100 more who are naively regurgitating wrote knowledge.

There are also aspects of credentialism that I see as valuable. Certifying someone knows basics in biochem + lab safety, ethics/welfare, and that proper steps are taken while doing experiments? Seems wise! But many are little more than security theatre & bureaucratic run around.

The only thing that I think seems worth while at this point is if I were to go after a PE. That one seems rigorous enough to signal competence. But even then, I don't plan on working in any field that requires anything close to that. So meh.

I think the answer for anything that has red-tape is for me to act as a consultant of an otherwise larger initiative. Things like IRB review can be covered by someone who's got an appetite for the process. But in the meantime my focus is on N-of-1 designs and Citizen Science.

Ultimately if we're talking about this in terms of risk to the general public, most of what I'm doing seems sheltered enough from that. I don't think anybody else is in a better position to judge personal risks than myself. It'd be a diff story if I was experimenting on others.

I also recognize I'm in a particularly biased position. I was the first in my fam to get access to higher ed & I see this credentialism as particularly pervasive form of gatekeeping. The federal program (TRiO) that helped me is consistently attacked.IMHO: We can do better.

If I was offered an opportunity to go back to college for something I was interested in (and my sleep schedule cooperated with it). I think I'd still go. But I would be very selective on what courses I took and not waste my time with bullshit teachers & make-work.

Stop caring about a piece of paper or hitting some arbitrary milestones decided by a board of directors trying to appease donators & industry. That's a game. They wanna look good and attract parents and sell prestige. This sets up a poor incentive alignment.

I can't really count the number of classes we had at Vermont tech where we spent hours and hours preparing for publics speaking and presentations. We were required to do 1. Each class had one. Mindlessly following a dictum from on high.

Jumping thru some arbitrary hoop of required course, that were only required because of some focus group with industry decided that "communication skills" were important. So instead of actually, you know, teaching those skills, we were thought how to write Memos.

If I had to do it all over again, I'd just skip required courses that were only there to appease some accreditation requirement or some bullshit metric. These were being done b/c the school needed them, not that I needed them.I look back and think about how much time I wasted.

I can actually go thru and calculate how much money I wasted on these courses, and by extension how much time I just threw away. Credits were calculated by how many hours you had your ass in a seat, not by learning outcomes. The whole thing reeks of institutional charades.

If I add these coures up and assume that these could be compressed down with some reasonable algorithm (scheduling is 'NP-hard'), I can compress my housing costs down to a third as well. But then I wouldn't meet those credit-hour reqs for a piece of paper! Its a tragic waste.

I learned a lot at college and I do value my time there, but for much of this is *in spite of* the environment, not because of it. Nearly every positive experience I had ended up being eventually systematically removed thru some kind of management shenanigan or structural change.

There is value in education. I am the last person in the world to speak against that. But there's a huge gap b/w learning something and being 'educated'. I hope to see a world where more people are given opportunities to avoid the credentialism trap.https://t.co/mczTqNspoN
