I laughed, but also to be fair - the simplicity on the other side of complexity is a whole different game https://t.co/7dlzjvzbf2

it takes a lot of work and study to get to effortless mastery. some masters pretend otherwise, but it’s typically just valorization for branding purposes https://t.co/sFK5lHzkPS

the catch is you often have to get intimately familiar with all the lines before you can really know which are the few lines that do all the work https://t.co/pAKxkmD113

done properly, you should only really introduce structure and scaffolding to the degree that it expands your options. eventually this gives you the contextual knowledge you need to sharpen your instincts, which makes your subsequent free-form improv better than it was before https://t.co/rDJAY2U8wi

I think about these two pictures from @joulee a lot – very succinct and powerful way of describing how professional creatives have a more structured process, and how that isn't necessarily limiting – you actually get to try more things this way https://t.co/XUA8zUZBMb

an awesome thing is that we can all help each other with these things, regardless of what stage we’re at. I can imagine my favorite educators - Victor Wooten, Richard Feynman, etc - looking at a “midwit” and saying, “whoa, that’s cool! have you considered X? What about Y?”

We don’t have to make other people feel bad or inferior for being somewhere in the middle of a journey - that’s a losing game because we are *all* in the middle of multiple journeys. Better to be earnest, encouraging, playful. We can cheerfully challenge each other to be great

the joy of creativity is to play with others. the more we encourage other people to play better, the more we make other people sound good, the larger and stronger the pool of talent we have to play with and create greatness with. This is how we build scenes https://t.co/D62mHVuQPJ

When you worship your heroes, you distract them from the process that enables them to make great work. Encourage the process, participate in the process. They’re people too. Every creative mind is always yearning for more good minds to play with https://t.co/cIPxy1wz1s

one of my recurring talking points to anybody who's willing to listen: any small group of people loosely-but-truly aligned on something can create powerful vectors by producing public-facing work that's directed at each other talking about the creation of scenes, basically

@visakanv Yes, this! I've been playing around with the idea of designing a product to build expert intuition, allowing for this sort of "improvisational" synthesis. I realized the importance of this because I noticed my Roam systems are developed on the fly. https://t.co/HOjdywivrc

I actually ended up finding that I implicitly follow many of the principles of his approach (albeit with a different implementation). After the tour, we talked for 20ish minutes and I showed him my ~equivalent approaches. I'll upload footage of that as well as a separate vid.

@visakanv The biggest open question I'm exploring in this area is how to communicate tacit knowledge through design https://t.co/5hiqTMGbMg

@jhooks This is my attempt at piecing together different perspectives on developing expert intuition, adjacent to good taste. I've been sitting on these notes for a while. Includes views from @visakanv, @andy_matuschak, @SpencrGreenberg, and a few others. I can share links if interested https://t.co/yPD0KzMblz

@visakanv .@Jonathan_Blow discussed how standard notation was literally invented to communicate how to play a song, and how games are built for communicating the unstated workings of complex systems. I'm curious your thoughts on this Q. https://t.co/yFTxRLdMYA https://t.co/2htREgifRZ

Standard notation for music was literally invented as a way of effectively communicating information about what people should play on their instrument. Words would be inefficient. Why don't we ask this question with literally every piece of knowledge we are trying to convey? 🤯️ https://t.co/fYei9RsAvY
