Wowwww this is so cool to read, because it's paradigmatically profoundly different from how I'm now thinking about things a year later. "not committed" feels like a completely confused frame to me now. now all about bottom-up emergence and treating all behavior as coherent https://t.co/Mr3k1yFw7U

And the intro to Roaring Silence talks about the importance of commitment. So all of this raises the question of whether on some level I'm not committed to kicking my addiction to compulsive thinking. Which might generate a kind of undermining, a forgetting of the instructions.

commitment is weird in the same way choice is weird (thread below) they obviously both describe real phenomena, but I now think that except in very narrow & concrete senses they're mostly left-hemisphere confabulation https://t.co/6Jq1DuDUZF

choice is weird I get it re external decisions - choosing to get on the flight or not, to accept a proposal or not, etc but people often talk about choosing things like an attitude, stance, mindset, or relationship to something, and this feels off to me as of a few months ago

I could say that the phrase in the tweet below is something I feel committed to on a really deep level (I recently described it as my best answer to "what am I in service to?") https://t.co/7tiWqVPnIN

May I integrate everything that wants to be integrated as it wants to be integrated.

...but when I'm really in touch with that intention, it feels so fucking obvious that I want to do this that "commitment" feels absurd, like me committing to dancing when the beat drops. I don't need that commitment because wtf else would I do? https://t.co/jsebzLtG7E

I used to think that the thing to do here was to try to "choose" growth mindset, but I now think that all such things are gaps in understanding. If growth mindset is in fact obviously better, it won't feel like a choice, it'll just feel obvious!

As with choice, my general sense with "commitment" is that if you're tempted to commit to something or say "I'm committed to X" then what this actually means if you're reifying an identification with one part of you, in opposition to some other part of you that you don't trust.

Huge value to temporarily trying on new defaults, whether routine or reflex, but when you don't do new thing, don't just recommit! As Kegan & Lahey say, agreements are not to prevent violations but to *create* them ๐Ÿคฏ without agreement, nothing to violate https://t.co/PyaYa4zUaU

Assume it made complete sense in this situation to do what you did, from some perspective that you don't see. One quip I like to make about that is "otherwise you would have done a DIFFERENT apparently-senseless thing!" https://t.co/XZGAuFDNPh

@magghu @QiaochuYuan If it keeps coming back, that means whatever you were doing was probably counteractive on some lvl (eg CBT) Or it comes back because some deeper schema needs it When you really *get* it, it's often like "Ohhh, of *course* I've been needing to X. But that doesn't make sense now"

Then try to find that perspective, and bring it in dialogue with your other perspectives. (to be clear, when I say "dialogue" here I mean Bohm's thing - it's orthogonal from using words. most talk is not dialogue, and attuned dancing or sex is dialogue) https://t.co/PjZKMJTgxV

Oh, I would caveat though, this perspective doesn't mean that any part of you wanted EXACTLY what happened. It could be the output of multiple conflicted subsystems, none of which are satisfied with the result. https://t.co/6lpoE7yIo2

"having is evidence of wanting" โ€” @carolynelliott_ This is true, on net, but can easily form an Over-reified Revealed Preferences frame, in that it doesn't account for the emergent results of conflict! ...which is what's underneath most behavior, particularly confusing behavior

arguably, when you're tempted to say *anything* it reflects an awareness of a world where that thing might not be true https://t.co/sFM0kE4IgW

every statement a person makes about themselves, their lives, the nature of reality etc. has a shadow statement. in order to find it worthwhile to say a thing you must simultaneously be aware of the possibility of it being false, or else it wouldn't even occur to you to say
