Real Gamer discourse is essentially centered around outrage over low-cost signaling.

"A hardcore gamer plays at least 5 hours a day" is reductive IMO. There are many other ways to be "hardcore". I say if you've ever - lost a job due to an MMO - broken up with someone over gaming - gone into games as a career then you're a Hardcore Gamer in my book.

In signaling theory, these are all high-cost signals of how important video games are to you. By contrast, anyone can just *say* "I'm such a gamer." The gatekeeping is a reaction to (perceived) status overreaches.

If games haven't cost you anything, you're not hardcore. If games haven't ruined your life, then I'm sorry but you're Just Not A Real Gamer.

I sort of believe that unironically? That there's tiers to it. There's a big difference between "enjoying Starcraft" and "being in Master League." A big difference between "I watch eSports sometimes" and "my parents disowned me."

I do think that people who only play Upset Avians are still Gamers, by the way. If you *want* to identify with a label, that honestly says a lot about your interest. Lots of reasons why people don't play more than their interest. No need to gatekeep the entire community.

Hot take: the reason Real Gamers are so often involved with these community-related issues is because Gamers are the worst people on earth at understanding status games. (how ironic...)
