I remember being told "you'll never make any money doing that, people would pick it up already" when telling someone about my plan to look for dropped cash after lunch rush at local gas station. Made $400 a week in tourist season. Store caught on & started 'sweeping' after lunch.

Modeling people's attention is an awesome way to make predictions about crowd level phenomena. Of course people aren't going to pick up dropped cash for the same reason they drop'd it in first place: too focused on their time constraints to bother putting their money away safely.

Ritual is a word that anthropologist use when they don't understand why the fuck somebody is doing something, and they assume by default it's as social signaling game.

The problem with memetic drift, and the ways that culture tends to shift over time, a lot of people practicing ritual don't even know why themselves.
