Late to seeing this, but I find this whole state of affairs to be really funny-tragic. (Context: I’m a brown Singaporean who’s followed by Supposedly Important White People 😂). It kind of reminds me of the Local Music Problem, which also rhymes with the Local Cuisine Problem https://t.co/hf0bMM4yHl

The Local Cuisine problem - described by formerly colonized people everywhere- Brazil, India, Indonesia, whatever - is that the most delicious and unique food you can get is also stuff that locals aren’t willing to pay $$$ for, because it’s not prestigious locally

It’s funny. I literally got so bored and tired of arguing about local things with my Singaporean friends that I decided that I was going to write for an international audience instead. Now that I‘m followed by *their* idols and heroes, suddenly they’re interested in me 🙄😂🤔

if you can’t earn the respect of locals directly because they refuse to see it, you might actually get it faster by going the long way around the world. (Once you get, it you might not want it. But that’s a position of strength and abundance, which is 🔥) https://t.co/oUEK1PVFCx https://t.co/DaDqCjs0Eu

I’ve mentioned an essay idea to several people in the past week and have received a lot of positive feedback about it. I call it the SLINGSHOT THEORY, loosely based on a sweet trick used by rocket scientists - using the gravity of a planetary body to add velocity to a spacecraft https://t.co/GIBM9fMcL3

It’s definitely easier in some respects. A thing nobody explicitly told me, but I think is true: it’s highly worth prioritising “foreign” experiences (eg getting your band to play out-of-state gigs) for the “proof-of-work”. Locals always overvalue this https://t.co/viFnbL4JqF https://t.co/ocra3rYyG4

I actually despise the fact that this works, bc it reveals how bad people are at recognising value, and how obsessed they are with social proof. But the cool thing about going on voyages is that you make amazing friends along the way, and that’s the part worth focusing on https://t.co/VDbUMHrEwQ

Funny-but-true fact: I could probably get more people to show up in a room for me in NYC than in 🇸🇬. And I’ve lived here all my life!! My local friends will mostly be like, “Visa’s talking? Ya la, he’s always talking. What’s new... That fella only know how to talk talk talk only”

I take solace in the fact that a much esteemed Fellow Dude on the public speaker circuit had the same problem. Local audiences, man, jeez. Tough crowd. Can’t please ‘em. (Matthews 13) https://t.co/RQ4nIhcHXq
