I really like the frame of having "a light touch", even better than frame of "not doing" this shows up all the time in physical skills. it's how you're supposed to hold drum sticks. it's how you're supposed to hold your sword

often when I think of action, it feel like a tug of war between hardocre manifest-your-will-on-reality and the opposed zen levels of accepting whatever happens these both feel like they are trying to manage me my managing the intensity of my want/desire.../

/... but "have a light touch" orients me to the manner in which I'm exerting control on my environ am I not exerting anything? do i have a death grip on the controls? both are gonna suck and not get me what I want

a light touch isn't a "balance" between Manifest-Will and zen-equinimity. A balance between those looks like "have ambition, but not too much"

hmmmmm, so the main way that Manifest Will can fuck you, is that your desire is SO Intense, and your fear of not meeting that desire is SO strong, that dumb panicy systems get put in charge of steering and force is mindlessly applied

i see zen-equanimity as observing that process and concluding the solution is to not have intense desire that sounds lame af! this leopard wants things!

the more reactive or unpredictable your environment, the more need to stay on your toes. your will/desire can be unbounded, but your touch must be light https://t.co/8UxLhmDLs4

to get some metis for this idea, a combat sport would help. the book of five rings also has the vibe a lot. yeah, having a light touch does not preclude swiftly cleaving an enemy obstacle in half ⚔️😎

@TheOrangeAlt this has been a thing that your recent "no half assing" has made me clarify. yes, i want to drop shit that doesn't matter and pursue shit that does. but I want to make sure I don't get a death grip on my sword

@ResonantPyre So, I think something weird happens that potentially makes it counterproductive to hold that goal. Essentially, martial arts texts seem to hold that our ideas of all goals are rigid in a way that induces blindness to the actual space of available action.

just found a great post by @silencenbetween on "grasping". Good first person perspective on what it feels like to grasp https://t.co/14n1Wirdbf
