the best forms of thinking are inherently hard to transfer/spread/communicate for societies to work there needs to be some interface/conflict-resolution mech between people "reasonable debate" i.e the approved group mech is necessarily an impoverished thinking/reasoning system

enlightenment memes and the general idea of "listening to reason" is pretty cool in that it seems like it's had a good effect on everyone killing each other less but you're fucked if you think that it's a paragon of clear thinking

reasonableness norms: - if a group is more or less aligned, they allow you to cooperate - if there's a schism, they give decent veto power to those invested in arguing - ^works unless the stubborn arguing group is small enough to be coordinated against as a quack
