Y'all ever realize that the X-Men were the bad guys? The 'moderate liberals' MLK wrote about? Imagine updating those stories with modern values. Magneto could be, like a Palestinian refugee whose family was murdered by Israel for protesting for water rights.
Magneto's found family of mutants is filled with trans and autistic and physically disabled and racially diverse people, and I want him to recruit them by saving them, one at a time, from destruction at the hands of a society they've spent their lives failing to appease.
I want every part of his team to have spent a whole lifetime trying to adapt, to focus on making those around them more comfortable, to go above and beyond human capacity to meet demands placed on them, and still be hated. Because that's how this works in real life.
I want even a meathead like Sabertooth to have a more nuanced understanding of intersectionality and oppression than any of the heroes pummeling him, because reading is a part of their training. I want Down Girl by @kate_manne in frame along with his other gear.
I want mystique to be nonbinary, and constantly on the edge of complete ego-death from having to perform so many identities all the time. I want to see the self-care she practices and I want to see the way her team supports her. Her default state is not "hetero-sexy", think Odo.
The Blob is fat. That's it. He's fat and he's tired of everyone constantly treating him like a non-human. Maybe he gets some tech that lets him plant in place and become an immovable object, but he's not even a mutant.
Pyro is of course bipolar. He's really doing his damned best, but sometimes he burns down everything he loves and he accepted a long time ago that he's beyond forgiveness or redemption. Magneto saved him from suicide, after a thoughtful inner monologue weighing agency and death.
Scarlet Witch is a witch, but in the real sense: she's deeply emotionally aware and really good at directing peoples attention towards narratives that serve the greater good. She's a therapist, maybe she helped save Magneto? And she's in despair over the mental health industry.
Quicksilver is obviously ADHD, maybe even autistic. He's operating at speeds nobody else can follow and he gets results, and his team are the only people in the world who just let him do his thing without constantly second-guessing him or trying to make him do things their way.
These stories have always been about oppression and marginalization - but they've never had a good understanding of privilege, and that lack of understanding led to a core narrative loop that reinforces internalized oppression. Let's do better! :)
And, like, imagine what the X-Men are doing in this world. How would that work? Each of them is "disabled" in some way, but they've each internalized their oppression. Professor X is physically disabled but his wealth shields him - he doesn't have the same experience as others.
I want to keep the Wolverine/Sabertooth, and I don't want to change Wolverine almost at all - but now Sabertooth's biggest strengths are intellectual. They argue while fighting in south texas, where wolverine is volunteering to protect the border.
Iceman is gay, sure. But he's gay in 2019, and while homophobia is still a very real and very serious problem in much of the world it's no longer what it was when the character first came out. And so he's gay but he's not an ally to anyone else. He got his, and "froze" in place.
Storm I'd change a little bit. Ethnically she's still got the same background, but she didn't grow up in the slums - her family moved to England where her parents were college professors. She is an activist but she is disconnected from her roots. Eventually she joins Magneto.
Cyclops is just fuckin' Cyclops, man: a boring-ass conventionally handsome straight white man put into a leadership position despite having zero emotional intelligence, and his superpower is that he can destroy everything he looks at. Not, uh, not much needs changed here, right?
Beast, oh poor Beast. Beast is autistic, but he was put into ABA therapy for years and as a result has completely internalized the idea that he is a monster who deserves love exactly to the extent that he can present as "normal".
Imagine telling THIS story. You've got Professor-X having a highly publicized debate with Jordan Peterson about whether mutants are still human. You've got Beast sharing antivax bullshit on twitter. You've got Cyclops put forward as 'representation'.
