I’m ~100 pages into Dune, I’m liking it so far. It’s a little demanding re: worldbuilding, but worth the effort I think. It reminds me of Ender’s Game in that it’s really *considered*- it’s pleasurable to inhabit + witness such thoughtfulness. Thanks @maskoficarus for the gift!

Just finished Book 1 (Dune is in 3 parts, + appendices). I liked it. There were twists, intrigue. I care for the characters. And I already sense that I’ll want to go back and read it again. It feels like a ā€œplatformā€ for discussing many layers of many things... ambitious

I mean, kind of a duh thing to say about a book that’s known to be of some sort of legendary status šŸ˜…, but still, I had to work through it for myself to see if it was legit. It seems legit. I worried it would be pretentious, but I would say that it’s not. Eager to finish it

This quote has been sticking with me. I feel like it applies perfectly to thinking about internet celebrity and going viral. You have to have a sense of the broader context, and be able to not take it personally, not fall into the trap of thinking "I went viral, I'm so great" https://t.co/6uqB4bYKZQ

Finished the book last night. I can see clearly how, if you read something like this as a teenager, it can imprint very strongly on you. What’s sticking with me is how much emotional nuance there is; I wasn’t expecting that from a book beloved by nerdy dudes

By nuance I mean how often the author has characters experiencing multiple emotions at once, discerning layers to each other’s utterances, people trying (to varying degrees of success) to represent one state when feeling another- kind of poker-esque. Kind of feminine, in a way

A thing I’ve been thinking about lately re: Dune is how effectively Herbert points out the usefulness of having many names. Paul Atreides, son of the Duke, Muad’dib, the Lisan al Gaib, Usul to his close friends. It’s all the same human being, and they’re all different people
