you can learn a lot about the world just by reflecting carefully on the disparity in how people treat their kids vs how they treat their grandkids (psst: it's about incentives)

it's still an adult-child relationship it's still a relationship between relatives people do change, but not ~thaaaat~ much the distinction is best explained by the removal of the unique set of expectations and assumptions about the parent-child relationship

something that kids seldom realize about their parents until they get older and/or have kids of their own: lots of parents worry *more than they'd like to*. many would prefer not to worry and fuss, but feel compelled to. sometimes (often? always?) it's via external forces

lots of asian and brown kids experience that pressure in the form of "what will society think?" and grandparents & elders, if they aren't trapped in arrested development, perform the important role of release valve, broadening and expanding the context it really takes a village https://t.co/zRn8duer3n

lots of parents are under a lot of stress. being responsible for a whole damn human life (or several!) is a pretty intense gig. there's a lot to be afraid of, as a parent, and fear-mongering always sells. I've seen well-meaning parents literally abuse their kids out of fear https://t.co/XmwkjLOHng

if you wanna get next-level on this stuff, you could get around to thinking about how trauma spreads and percolates through entire systems – things like war, famine, etc can ruin people's relationships with their family https://t.co/8Pwp00zyLV
