Rewatching Kung Fu Hustle [2004], one of the best movies ever made https://t.co/PPTKPCBHad

In the first few minutes already the setup is intense, funny, and compelling. There’s a terrible gang called the Axe Gang - cruel, evil, and also... weird https://t.co/91dfxwIGAS

Next we cut to a peaceful, poor, happy town with kids playing. We’re introduced to a coolie, a noodle maker and a tailor while we follow a landlord doing his rounds. Honest good men doing honest work and getting by. A pleasant ordinary world https://t.co/6QLTenhPSp

We also meet the landlady, who is the local tyrant 😂 killer auntie energy https://t.co/oHccNapBXS

Our idiot heroes arrive in town, pretending to be axe gang members, trying to get a little money. The townsfolk do not buy their nonsense https://t.co/PAzBlLmVuY

I’m a little too lazy to keep doing this thread for the rest of the movie but trust me it just keeps getting better https://t.co/l8L8S1ztK2

It’s interesting to pay attention to how the show does its reveals. It definitely merits a 2nd and 3rd watch - Buddhist palm manual - the lady selling ice cream - “the fat lady can sing” - “how do you heal so fast?” - the musicians mentioning the Beast Extremely artful setups https://t.co/UejcRUwN5P

The frogs in the asylum!!! The foreshadowing https://t.co/3uHFPWk6pR

On rewatch I find myself thinking that this is a movie about status. Violence and power is a critical part of it. But it’s also a classic hero’s journey story about a guy desiring strength, power, status... seeking it from the wrong source(s), and then transcending the whole game https://t.co/9ExAQRqqOn

incredible https://t.co/VxRMCxrD3d
