Twitter as a company is culturally oriented around NOW. Product reflects this. The Twitter users who search their own and others timelines for building webs of threads are hacking the platform to build a collaborative Memex (memory extension) Eventually those users will migrate

When they do, Twitter will still be useful for reach (inviting in new collaborators), but real magic -- conversation, shaping of ontologies, extending and refining of ideas -- will happen elsewhere. cc @ultimape @GRITCULT @visakanv @Malcolm_Ocean @KevinSimler @vgr @context_ing

@Conaw @ultimape @GRITCULT @visakanv @KevinSimler @vgr @context_ing One thing I'm unsure of, in all of this, is the role of time. Another platform will be less NOW-oriented, but I think that part of what I like is that Twitter (more than blogging) makes it really clear that this tweet is a thought I'm having *at this point in time*

@Conaw @ultimape @GRITCULT @visakanv @KevinSimler @vgr @context_ing If I make a tweetstorm about something, it doesn't have to be the be-all-end-all reference for a topic, it's just "what I thought about this at this time". Lends itself to unpolished writing & thus thinking-together rather than me-telling-you. https://t.co/TwxowGPWz4

@Conaw @ultimape @GRITCULT @visakanv @KevinSimler @vgr @context_ing Visa has written about forgetting he wrote somethingβ€”this is the nature of writing! And sometimes rediscovering it is like "wow!" https://t.co/IxD2LnddQx

One my fav things about writing is when you forget you wrote something, rediscover it, and actually like it – meaning you're your own fan https://t.co/IwnXEjl0Pg

@Conaw @ultimape @GRITCULT @visakanv @KevinSimler @vgr @context_ing And sometimes rediscovering it is like 🀦. Like reading your old OKC answers and being like "I used to be a ______ist??" Someone (can't find source) was suggesting no edit button (edit is doom) but an ability to renounce an old tweet, which makes a lot of sense to me!

@Conaw @ultimape @GRITCULT @visakanv @KevinSimler @vgr @context_ing Edit is doom because it means tweets lose their temporality, and makes it easier to become perfectionistic. But having renounce gives an option instead of deleteβ€”supporting the idea that it's okay to learn and the past isn't shameful. Would require cultural differences too ofc!

@Conaw @ultimape @GRITCULT @visakanv @KevinSimler @vgr @context_ing (To be clear, "renounce" is prrrrooobably the wrong name for this feature πŸ˜‰ And probably it would make sense to have an option to point any viewers of that tweet at a new one that clarifies.)

@ultimape @Conaw @GRITCULT @visakanv @KevinSimler @vgr @context_ing Yes, I like this. Maybe building on the wabi-sabi metaphor... instead of "renounce tweet", could say "repair tweet". That has its own issues but it's a neat idea.

A great feature of the memex, and the fact that so many who use it go meta in discussing how they use Twitter, is that you can stumble upon the origin stories of the threading superheros Here's @visakanv uncovering hidden powers in 2016 https://t.co/Hj0M7pTnBM

@ryandawidjan I love how you reply to old tweets. Do you google for them, or save/store them, or what?

@ryan_nayr_ @webdevMason I write on many different mediums and over time my twitter style has infected my other mediums, I now blog and Facebook like I’m tweeting. I’ll now be able to find *this* tweet by searching β€œinfected”. It’s actually modified the way I think to be search-friendly

This is how Twitter as a social memex should work. @Malcolm_Ocean gracefully pointing to contradictions in @fortelabs own tweets Friends helping friends explore thoughtspace. Problem (maybe) is none of those tweets now link back to new aggregation.

There are a great many UIs that would make it much easier to explore, extend and remix ideas than the linear UI of Twitter threads https://t.co/DRsdf7OO1d

"Social media sites have made information consumption a very linear process...Content that's more than a week old is fossilized under the endless dump of new posts, links, pictures. On social media, time is the main ordering principle" -@aaronzlewis
