Non-musicians and non-pianists: did you know that you can have a lot of fun noodling around on the black keys? It’s the pentatonic scale! I was like in my mid-20s when I learned this, and I don’t know why nobody showed me this https://t.co/S0kz1ne5Th

My musical knowledge and ability is this sort of scrappy junkyard mess. Extremely incoherent, extremely haphazard, inelegant, clunky. And yet. And that whole experience in turn I guess has informed my approach to learning... anything

The way to learn anything IMO is to start by asking “what are the black keys?” And then develop a fingertip feel for that https://t.co/WOWjc9qc7O

Book opens with a joke about how learning the details of technicalities is ineffective when learning a new language. Frank compares 4 years of Spanish (ineffective) vs 13 weeks of rudimentary Nepalese with the Peace corp, mimicking children (effective)

@visakanv If you have a few Chinese friends interested in music, you might be able to find out about this sooner. Large swaths of ancient Chinese music uses this pentatonic scale. Even some traditional-style pop song like 周杰伦's 《青花瓷》are in this pentatonic scale.

@visakanv Sorry if I sounded rude in above. It was meant only as an FYI, not as any insult; hence the "if you have" instead of "if you had". I like your tweets and know you're from SG; i was just trying to point out some potentially interesting things.

@visakanv I love noodling around on the piano. I noodle around on the white keys too! Piano is somewhat accessible to a non-musician just because you can create patterns visually based on how the keys are laid out, and repeat patterns that you find pleasing
